Module 2: Artist Interviews
Christian St. James

Christian St. James the songerwriter and performer of the #1 chart busting hit “Bobbie Jean” (which can be heard at cashboxcountdowns.com) is a lover’s lament about a woman who ditches her small hometown and becomes a movie star in Hollywood.

To make No. 1 on the Cashbox chart, a song must be played at least 3,300 times on commercial radio in one week. St. James’ song had 3,500 spins, and Elrod expects it to stay at the top of the charts for six or seven weeks. The chart also considers factors including sales and downloads.

Cashbox Magazine was a weekly print magazine from 1942 to 1996 and was where the Beatles first made the American charts. It was revived online in 2006 with occasional print versions, and it’s considered a competitor of Billboard.

In April, St. James will begin a 158-date tour, performing with some of the established artists he’s now sharing the chart with, which may include Kelly Clarkson. The schedule will be finalized in about a month.

He’ll finally be able to afford backup musicians and he’ll work on his next CD at local recording studios while on tour.

“Now I’ll have the chance to work with some of the best musicians on the planet,” he said.

“I think I can inspire people, and I know I have more hits in me.”
