JOHN RAMISTELLA TURNS 73
a.k.a. “Johnny Rivers”

He was born John Henry Ramistella 73 years ago Saturday (November 7, 1942) but legendary DJ Alan Freed suggested he call himself Johnny Rivers.

Yup, Johnny Rivers turns 73 Saturday.

If I’m not mistaken, he’s the king of the remakes with at least 15 of them becoming charted hits. I counted 13 charted remakes for Donny Osmond, so the race is close.

Johnny Rivers founded Soul City Records, which in turn introduced us to the Fifth Dimension.

While he had all those remakes, his biggest hit wasn’t one. “Poor Side Of Town,” which Johnny co-wrote with Lou Adler, was his only #1 hit from about this time in 1966.

Another of his hits, “Summer Rain,” has a mistake…well, at least technically. This lyric line was impossible to happen: “And the jukebox kept on playing ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band].” Why? Because jukeboxes played only 45 rpm singles…and when that legendary Beatle LP was released, there were no 45’s released from it!

Enjoy this live version of his biggest hit…

And rock with him live on “Wild Night”…

Rock with his remake of a Kingston Trio song…

We slow it down to “Look for Your Soul”…

More blue-eyed soul from his “Realization” LP with “Brother Where Are  You”…

Finally, rock out to the classic rock remake done first by Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley…
