TO A WOMAN HITS #1 COUNTRY

Bobby Helms didn’t simply record the first Christmas rock and roll-style song.  “Jingle Bell Rock” became a classic in 1957…but so do did Bobby’s previous single.

On this day in 1957, it climbed to #1 on the country chart…and became what I consider the greatest song ever dedicated to a woman

“My Special Angel” would spend four weeks at #1 on the country chart. It had already been a top 10 pop hit in November of ’57. Plus, it crossed over to the R&B chart, where it also made the top 10. “My Special Angel” and “Jingle Bell Rock” climaxed an incredible 1957 for Bobby Helms. Earlier in the year, he had still another huge country #1 hit with “Fraulein,” which spent a entire year (52 weeks) on the country chart.

Eleven years later in 1968, “My Special Angel” was a remake top tenner for the Vogues.  Bobby Vinton, Frankie Avalon and the Crests have also recorded it.

So what are my rankings of the top 10 greatest songs dedicated to a woman? Glad you asked…
